What are thyroid conditions?

The thyroid is one of the most important glands in your body and influences all of your metabolic processes. The thyroid is located in the front of your neck and releases hormones that are involved in the healthy functioning of energy, metabolism, sleep, digestion, sexual function, body temperature, hair and nail growth and hormone regulation.

There are many different thyroid conditions, but the most common thyroid disorders involve the over or under production of thyroid hormones, or thyroid imbalance. People who are experiencing some form of thyroid imbalance often experience unpleasant symptoms that may have been mistaken for another condition.

Some of the symptoms associated with thyroid imbalance include:

  • fatigue

  • anxiety

  • irritability

  • depression

  • memory issues

  • feeling “foggy”

  • sleep issues

  • weight gain

  • weight loss

  • neck swelling

  • hair loss

  • dry nails

  • feeling too cold or too hot

  • abnormal menstruation

  • numbness in the hands

What causes Thyroid Imbalance?

HYPERTHYROIDISM

Hyperthyroidism, or overactive thyroid, is a condition of the thyroid caused by the overproduction of thyroid hormones. An abundance of thyroid hormones can cause many symptoms including unexpected weight loss, excessive sweating, fatigue, hair loss and irritability.

A common cause of Hyperthyroidism is Graves disease. Graves disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes overproduction of thyroid hormones.

Another cause of Hyperthyroidism is Thyroiditis, or inflammation of the thyroid gland that results in excessive hormone production. Growths on the thyroid including thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer are less common causes of an overactive thyroid.

HYPOTHYROIDISM

On the contrary, Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, is a condition of the thyroid cause by an underproduction of thyroid hormones. When your thyroid does not produce enough hormones many symptoms can occur including weight gain, fatigue, feeling cold, muscle weakness, high cholesterol, joint pain or stiffness and depression. If left untreated, Hypothyroidism can lead to an enlarged thyroid gland, or a thyroid goiter.

A common cause of Hypothyroidism is Hashimotos thyroiditis. Hashimotos thyroidits is an autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation of the thyroid tissue and interferes with the thyroids ability to produce sufficient hormones. Hypothyroidism can also occur when the thyroid has been surgically removed.

THYROID GROWTH

An enlarged thyroid gland is called a goiter. Goiters can be associated with hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism and can appear as swelling of the neck and make it uncomfortable to swallow food. Thyroid nodules, on the other hand are lumps on the thyroid that should be evaluated by a doctor to be sure they are benign. Thyroid cancer is the most rare thyroid condition but often diagnosed if your doctor notices a thyroid nodule and evaluates it.
